Hey guys,
I thought I’d share with everyone a simple fix to an iPhone speaker problem.
Problem: The iPhone speaker works fine when headphones are plugged into it. However, as soon as the headphones are removed, there is no sound emitted from the iPhone. In other words, the iPhone speaker doesn’t work. My phone wouldn’t ring and I couldn’t hear any sound from the iPhone. This happened to my phone after it was water damaged.
Solution: Find a q-tip. Insert the q-tip into the headphone jack of the iPhone. Swivel the q-tip around for a bit and clean the inside of the headphone jack. Once I did this, the problem was magically fixed!

*Also note that if you accidentally do drop your phone in water, you can attempt to fix it by putting the phone in a container of uncooked rice. The rice soaks up most of the moisture from the phone. You should detach the battery pack (if possible) and leave it in the uncooked rice for at least 6 hours. This should be done as soon as possible for maximum effect.

I have to say, I thought this would never in a million years work. My phone got a little damp today and i wasn’t hearing anything from the regular speaker- i could use speakerphone, my ringtone and other sounds were working, but the in-call speaker didn’t work. There are a few other minor issues that I can live with, but this is kind of a key function of what a cell phone is supposed to do.
Upon first reading the solution, it does appear to be simple. But the simple solutions are the best 🙂

I have an iphone 4, which was dropped in water by my daughter, that time we opened the back and removed the battery and let it dry for 2 days. After 2 days the iphone luckily booted up and all things were working fine only the sound is gone no ringtone, no ipod, no volume bar in ipod. the volume button works but the ringer level is blank, tried ur q-tip method not working, what to do????
To be honest, I am not sure. This quick fix is a trial and error, first step. If it works, that’s great, but if it doesn’t, I think bringing it into an iPhone repair shop is your best bet.
If you opened your phone to get to the battery, make sure everything is hooked back together when you put it together again to use. When I washed my phone (oops), I had take it apart so that it could dry quicker than leaving it together. I did not try to disconnect anything inside the phone, but the 1 and 2 connections fell out and the 3 connection followed (I have a 3gs, I don’t know if 4 is the same). The 1 and 2 connections were easy to see and I made sure they were put back together before putting the screen back on. The 3 connection was much more difficult to see and while I thought it was in, it must not have been in securely and fell out when I put the phone back together. Everything seemed to work fine except that I wasn’t receiving any sound through the ear speaker (all other sound – headphones, other speaker, was ok) I spent an hour trying to fix the problem with the headphone and q-tip method but they did not work. Thats when I took the phone apart and saw the connection 3 was out. When it was put back in, I had ear speaker functionality again. I would suggest opening up the phone again and checking if you have the same problem.

My phone was exposed to some droplets of water in the top speaker…probably in the night when some water might have spilled over the speaker.
I noticed it in the morning….tried the q-tip method but was unfortunately unsuccessful.
Do you suggest something else apart from this?
There is sound but it is very very minimal.

I would try the second method that I posted; the method using rice to extract the water. It may be too late, but I would give it a shot. Make sure you leave it in for at least 6 hours. I really hope it works.

Thank you so much it’s worked I’m hoping it stays this way because I tried other solutions for the speaker and they worked but then it went out I thought oh no what if it soaked water up off my bathroom counter! I then checked my water indicators they were white thank god but speakers still weren’t working! Mu resort was apple & explaining and praying I don’t have 2paybut your solution worked amazing!!! Oh my gosh this saved my life! Honestly! Thank you so much!!! My boyfriend got an iPhone 4 for Christmas and I accidently knocked my coke over at dinner and it only got on the left hand top corner yet it didn’t work.. The speakers were screwed and I was soooo upset.. A five day old phone and I wrecked it!! But I decided to trust good old google and found this page! I tried it and it dodn’t work at first. I tipped his iPhone upside down and did it again and it instantly worked!!

This did not work for me. I dropped my iPhone in the toilet a few weeks ago. Did the rice thing or over 2 days and it works fine but the sound had issues. The sound seems to work and not. As I have been writing this post from my phone the clicking sound when typing has came and went twice. My ringers for calls and text work off and on. It’s very weird. I have used my headphones and it works and ten doesn’t also. Does anyone know what I can do? I have reset the phone back to factory settings also. I hope I don’t need to get a new one. I really love this phone. Would a restore work? Wiping the whole phone. Thanks for any answers. 🙂

A drop of coffe spilled on my iphone 4 and the speaker stopped working. I tried the Q-tip but didn’t work then i tried the rice bag technique. Stored in a bag of rice for about 6 hours and bingo!!! my phone is as good as it was. Thank You mate. You saved me many a bucks.

It finally worked! Ive been reading peoples comments about birds crapping on the phone, in the dog bowl, bath, toilet and your TIP worked for them. I had the smallest amount of water hit my phone (spilt drink) and it did not work first time round. But I did not give up and it worked.

I have tried both of your suggestions, but neither has worked for me. I do not ever remember any sort of liquid getting in contact with my iphone, but it is behaving very much like many of us here are experiencing. My case was soon after the upgrade to 5.1 it started doing that. It is an IP 4 so not sure if it is covered by any sort of warranty. I was just wondering if any one else experieced the same after the upgrade to 5.1.

Please tell me this works for other phones! I have the Galaxy Nexus which i dropped in the washing machine for about a few seconds and i took it out right away cleaned it and checked only to find out the front speaker is not working and than few seconds after it crashed so i turned it off took out everything and it’s been sitting in a bag of rice for some hours now, you think that q-tip will work?

I thought this sounded completely ridiculous at first (how does the headphone jack connect to the lower speakers???), but I gave it a try on my iPhone 4 and it fixed it INSTANTLY. So weird.
I think where the water goes into the headphone jack area it may have rusted/ insulated or something effectively telling Iphone that headphones are plugged in. This telling the loud speaker to turn off- the same way it would if headphones were jacked in? I don’t know i and i still find it hard to believe BUT I haven’t yet tried as I can’t find a qtip but will try ASAP!

Wife’s iphone 4, which is in a otter-box defender case was on the counter over night plugged in being charged and water got into it from a spilled glass of water. That morning when we noticed, some of the audio on the phone including ear piece was not working. Tried rice overnight…did not fix it….. Came across on google and tried the cue tip trick in the video and on the third try it fixed it. AMAZING, I can barely believe it fixed the problem so easily. Thanks, thank you, and thank you very much !!

Hey! I tried this, and I think it helped a little. My phone doesnt show sign of damage by turning red in the headphone jack or in the area of the charger. I tried headphones and it all worked. So here is my question… Why cant I hear anything on the earpiece? How can I fix it?
I was completely skeptical, but my daughter had put her phone in a cupholder that had some water in it. Her phone worked okay otherwise, but she could not hear her music. She was so upset! I put her phone in rice as soon as we got home (had heard of this before) and then googled iPhone 4 water volume and found your solution. I really didn’t think it would work…but it did! At first this didn’t work for me. I tried a few times and I was getting depressed but I finally gave it one more shot, and really pressed the cotton bud in hard so that I could feel the friction as I twisted it and to my shock, phone is working perfectly again! Woohoo!

I was terrified because i’d literally JUST dropped it in the bath & hadn’t told my mum! But, like you said, however i didn’t have any q-tips and i just stuck a fork in there and then turned it off and it totally worked! You’re a life saver!

I droped my iphone 3gs in the toilet & quickly took it out. It started working normally after about 20-25 minutes but speaker wont work,tried the volume button,played some songs but still it wont work,i even tried your advice of the q-tip but unfortunately that too did not work.Well then i went to settings & checked the ringtone & it sounded normal even gave miss call from another phone and that too worked pls can u suggest an alternate method????

You practically saved me from using the SPEAKER function during every single call in the next year (2-year contracts for iphones in my country). 🙂 There was no way to hear the people I was talking to otherwise. 😦 Two nights of riceball confinement did not help my phone either. But as soon as I watched your video I ran to the bathroom, grabbed a q-tip and almost fell into the loo as IT WORKED! I watched my favourite YouTube song immediately. 🙂
Never again will I use my iphone for directions in the rain. I will prefer getting lost with my scooter instead.

You rock dude, that fixed my problem. Instead of using a q-tip I used a can of air on the headphone jack. I didn’t use the q-tip because I didn’t have one but also had reservations about getting some fibers from the q-tip left in the jack. Thank you, you made my day 🙂

If q-tip doesn’t work. Try blowing compressed air into the jack. (The kind you buy to clean your keyboard.) Hold phone with jack angled down so tiny debris, etc can fall out

This is insane! I thought this fix wouldn’t do anything. Me and my friend got pushed into the water today, somehow she managed to only get the bottom of the phone wet, and I just realized the speaker quit working. i just dropped my iphone 4 in a lake. scooped it out within 15 seconds of it falling in. dried it off right away on my clothing… seemed to work fine except no sound. I dried it some more by putting it in a bag of rice for 2 hours… then i blasted the speakers with a blow dryer (which i guess i now know wasnt a good idea) to no effect. I then placed it on the batter charger in a vertical position and left it for 30 minutes when i tried it out it worked again… maybe im just lucky…. not many can tell the tale of their phone being ont he lake floor and living to tell you about it

The speaker phone just stopped working, along with my music. I have a 4S. I don’t think it’s water damage… I have tried your tip four times to no avail. Please help!!
I dropped it with my LifeProof case on and water flooded in… I tried this and it didn’t work. Even my heaphones won’t work… That sucks.

It worked for me, too! It started raining while I was at an outdoor concert, and even though I was able to talk to my mom shortly afterward, when I got home I couldn’t hear anything (unless I turned on speaker). I had my iPhone in rice, but I’m glad I thought to look up damaged speakers!

I dropped my iPhone in a bucket of water and I was googling for help, and i gained inspiration from your method and my speakers are now working fine 🙂
I could not find a Q-tip that fit into the jack socket, so I moulded a piece of tissue into the same length and width as my earphone plug and twisted it around a little, and it fixed! 😀

It never worked for mine. I dropped it in the toilet, and I put it in rice for a day. Everything is working fine except for the speakers, like I can hear my music through my headphones and I can hear people when they call me but other than that it won’t make any sound. I tried the q-tip thing but it still isn’t working. I am very gutted.

Awesome tip. Had no sound from the earpiece during a call and couldn’t play i pod through speaker, could only use phone on speaker phone and the phone (4) was locking. Didn’t have a q-tip, used a twisted piece of toilet paper, single ply, new. pulled out a little piece of lint or something. Phone works great now.

i just went into panic mode (following a mild, but unfortunate coffee incident). i’ve heard about the rice technique and immediately buried my phone in basmati! then i saw the youtube video and tried the qtip technique. it didn’t work. tried a blow dryer…didn’t work (and was too nervous to keep the air/heat on the phone). after reading someone’s comment (i think on youtube) about rice getting stuck in the headphone jack, i put the phone back in the basmati with the qtip inside the headphone jack. i just took it out and IT WORKS!!!! i’ve put it back in the rice (qtip and all) and will leave it there for a few more hours…just for good measure. Holy crap, thank you!
So with you just happened to me today… a bunch of rice got stuck in the head phone jack area… pulled it carefully tried the qtip method and it worked!!! well at least the sound (speaker, calls, tones etc., text messages, internet) working. have it in rice with a qtip in hoping everything will turn out fine…THANK YOU soo much for the advice i was about to flip for being so stupid!

Thank you so much! This was a wonderful quick fix. I had dropped my phone in the sink while water was running, and couldn’t get the speakers to work, nor could I be heard when I made a call. Tried this when I got home and it worked like a charm! Took a few minutes of cleaning the jack before the sound kicked back in, but now everything is in working order again. Cheers!

Unfortunately this method did NOT work for me, although I did try it a few times after I dropped my phone in a tub full of water for literally 3 seconds. I decided to do the rice trick and turn off the phone. Left the phone in the rice for about 30 minutes, turned it back on and I heard music playing from the speaker but it was very faint with the volume turned up. The volume was working fine for the speaker but when I used the same q-tip (after I removed some of the cotton) on the speaker the audio comes from and wiped it back and fourth it magically got louder! I asked my sister to call me so that I can verify for sure it works and low and behold the ring tone came on. So happy, was getting worried!

Amazing! I cant actually beleive this worked. I think it must be something to do with the jackplug connector sticking in the ‘out’ posistion and thinking headphones are still plugged in. Thanks for taking the time to share! Such a simple solution to a possible very expensive repair!

Today morning i dropped my iphone4s in sink for fraction of seconds. When i wiping it i tried to dry it out with hair dryer(which was a mistake now i know). Thought the cover saved it at first but realized the speaker wasn’t working once I tried to make a call. Its working with loud speaker and headphone but normal speaker is not working. Am at work now. Do you think if i put my phone in rice in evening would help? Would it be too late then? Also in headphone jack i noticed i pink circle inside white circle.

Dropped my phone in the toilet. Put it in rice really quick after drying it and it still worked but I didnt notice until I saw this that my speakers werent working. Luckily enough i clean it with some q-tips that i had to stretch out cause they didnt fit and it fixed it! Last night I knocked over a glass of water on my iPhone 5. Didn’t notice that I had until the morning. Phone was covered in water. In the morning I couldn’t hear calls when held up to my ear however when I chose to hear it threw the speakers everything was fine. I knew instantly I was screwed… or so I thought. I quickly placed it into a small ziplock bag with rice. Then started searching on the net. Found this post, which really didn’t explain my exact issue since I could hear from the phones bottom speakers but what did I have to lose? I pulled the phone out. Cleaned the headphone jack and everything started working.
I use this phone for work and was prepared to shell out $800 to get a new one today. THANK YOU

Hi I lost my iphone to a sink full of water, I didn’t chance it, I immediately turned it off and wiped it down and put it in a ziplock with rice for about 2 days. When I came back to it, everything worked except the speakers. I found your site and immediately tried the q-tip trick, unfortunately it didn’t work. However, I kept getting an icon showing that the sound was being transferred to a “docking station”. I checked the dock area, and wiped it with the q-tip, then inserted my charger and voila!! It worked. Thanks for helping me get started, so glad there’s people like you putting hope for the rest of us. I’d had to pay someone to fix it!

Thanks for your tutorial. Initially my phone was looking good, but then I noticed the sound wasnt working properly I checked for the tell-tale water marks – and none. Phew. Put into rice and kept taking it out cuz I have no patience and I found your site. I tried the q-tip but it didn’t fit, so i used a toothpick with papertowel. The sound came back but only on high. So it is back into the bag of rice and trying to remain patient and positive.
I could not find a sim card slot on my phone, which was another reason why i took it out of the bag. Guess i should have learned more about the phone. I am scared.

My phone was not working even with the headphones in, after following this tip my headphones now work but can not hear iPod, and the speaker bar on the side of phone does not work. The alarm does work tho, any ideas?
So, the Q-Tip did not work for me. I laid the phone down next to a blow dryer on COOL (do not use warm/hot!!!) and leave it for a few minutes. This worked.
The water in/around the headphone jack tricks the phone into thinking that something is plugged into the jack, and it therefore disables the speakers. So if the Q-Tip alone does not work, use the blow dryer method followed by the bag of rice method mentioned earlier.
I just nearly had a melt down!!! I spilt coke all over my phone. It wasnt submersed but thoroughly drenched. It worked and the screen was fine, but my speaker had stopped working. I did the whole rice thing, and then found this blog. YOU SAVED MY LIFE. I cudnt believe it, a trusty cotton bud and low and behold its working again. I cant thank you enough lol. Cheers x

The q-tip actaully wouldn’t fit in the headphone jack! So I took off the fluffy part an swirled it around , sound came back! The spun was blurry though, so I took the end that I didn’t take the fluffy part off of and I cleaned the speakers at the bottom of the iPhone, an now my sound is better then ever! Thanks alot

I took my phone to Apple store and they asked me to pay £119 to fix it and it took me only 10 minutes to google, find your blog and follow the instructions. Walah! bro you are an angel. I NEVER leave comments, but so impressed this trick sorted my phone so felt I have to say thanks. Not sure if it was the water (had veen in my pocket during heavy rain) or just something that can come dislodged but wiggling a small cotton bud (q-tip) fixed it.
It works!!!! I accidentally fully submerged my phone in water. All was working, but the audio. Did not have q-tip, so rolled the tip of a Bounty and inserted into the head phone jack and it works!!! OMG you are awesome. Thanks a lot!

i accidentally spilt water on my ipod 5 about 5 hours ago and i just tried the q-tip remedy but it didn’t work. I’m now going to soak it in rice overnight and keep my fingers crossed! next time I should do it immediately ew im so stupid
Hello, my phone got water damaged 2 days ago, and the damage is exactly as you described. Also the volume adjustment buttons were working as well. I’ve had my phone in a bag full of rice for at least 36 hours and I just found your q-tip trick as well. But none of those have worked. Do you perhaps know any other way I can fix this if these 2 methods don’t work? Or am I safer taking my phone to the Apple Store? Please help, your opinion would be greatly appreciated!!

OMG THIS ACTUALLY WORKS. I just got back from shoveling snow and i had my phone in my pocket and I guess lots of snow got in it and I went to look at the time and it was was covered in snow and it was wet too. I dried it off with no problem and saw it was still working so I minded my own business. But then the volume didnt work! I was listening to music in my shower and it fell 6 feet into the stream of the water I quickly took it out of the case and patted it dry turned it off and left it in a towel while I finished. After I turned it back on everything but the audio was working, the ringer was working but not music and I couldn’t change the volume. I tested to see if it played with headphones and on the dock of the ihome which it did so I was unsure what to do. I tried the qtip idea and it didn’t work, I went to try and use the bag of rice idea when it magically started to play. Pretty sure the qtip idea had an affect on the phone. So thank you veryuch for the help, very smart idea!

I just dropped my phone in the sink I could not hear anything no music nothing.i dried it off and blew into every hole. I had a heater for the winter and let it sit there for 2 minutes while moving it around. Then I put it in some dry oatmeal and sat it infront of the heater for a bit.cleaned it off then sucked into the holes and everything works perfect

Yesterday afternoon I accidentally dropped my iPhone 5s into a sink filled with water (there was also trace of soap in the water). I pulled it out right away so it was in the water for maybe 2 seconds or so. I dried it off in a towel as well as I could. The phone was still working but the sound from the speakers stopped playing music. I turned off the phone, took out the SIM and put the phone in a small plastic bag filled with UNCOOKED RICE and SILICA GEL and left it like that for 24h. Turned it on without any problem but the sound still didn’t work. Then I started google-ing and found your post.

Try a Hard Rest…where you hold the power button and big button at the same time until the phone turns off….than turn it back on…I had to do this when I thought this lil trick did not work for me….after the hard reset my sound was back….

My phone got wet in the rain today and had a very low sound coming out of it. Once I got home I plugged in the blow dryer and held it to the speakers and headphone jack for a few seconds and it was back to normal again!!! Hope this tips helps too. 😊

It worked!!!! Woo Hooooooooo! At first it didn’t work but would work on speaker phone and then after a few minutes, I tried it without the speaker phone and it worked that time. I used the Q-tip a couple of times just to be sure. Thanks soooooo much and for taking the time to post. 🙂 🙂

It worked!!!! Just turned a q-tip round and round both ways just a few times and my text sound is back. Unusual that the ringer sound worked prior to cleaning, but not the text sound or music. But I’m glad it’s up and running properly again!

The so called “lifeproof case” does not protect against water damage.. (My phone shows the red indicator of water damage) My phone would not play sound or allow me to talk on the phone. I could use head phones and speaker to talk on the phone (inconvenient). I put a qtip in where the head phones plug in and moved it around for a little and sound magically started coming out!!! THANK YOU! So helpful!!

I accedently dropped it in water and it got stuck in headphones. I tried everything but nothing worked but I used a blow dryer and sucked on the headphone jack really really hard and it went off headphones
Tried this and this worked. At first I couldn’t fit the q tip in the hole but then I took some of the soft part off and swiveled a few in there and my phone works great now.
This worked so great you have to use a few q-tips but it works tank u soo much I thought my phone was gone

if ur speakers doesnt work or has like a robotic creepy sound, try vaccuuming it from the speakers, not to strong. because my iphone got wet for like 5 seconds and i didnt have a vaccuum i just tried to suck it out (of course i cleaned my phone and my lips didnt even touch the speakers) because blowing on the speakers would make the water go much futher in, blowing it the other side (sucking it out) would send the water dry and out.
hope this help, this is not gross at all if u really want ur phone to be fixed hahaha

Yea! Worked for me too! I had to tear a little of the cotton off and use both ends of the swab to get it dry enough but my phone actually rang loud and clear about 5 seconds after I finished. Thank you so much for posting this!!!

Honestly was panicking thinking my phone was broke completely as the speaker wasn’t working and nobody could her me on the phone call until I came across this site and I used some tissue not a q tip as I didn’t have any and it’s worked wonders. Does it matter how long you take to put the Q tip in? I dropped my iPod 5th generation in a bowl for a few seconds. I just wiped it off and thought nothing of it, until I noticed the speaker so would that affect it and the speaker still not work because I waited too long?

I used something similar….a cheap napkin. Toilet paper might work too. Rolled it up tiny and put it in the headphone jack. took 3 or 4 times but it also worked

2 days my speaker has been broke on my phone had no sound tried rice and everything I was cracking up just tried the ear bud trick and it’s working thank you so much!
Yesterday I was at a toddler water park with my phone in my back pocket headphone/charger port up. There were giant buckets above the play area that would fill and dump every few minutes and of course, while I’m talking to my 2 year old, the 8-10 gallon buckets pour over everyone and I was soaked. My phone was soaked and I took my phone out but I had to go to work so there was nothing I could do to rice wise. I didn’t know not to charge it And it worked as far as I could tell. Hours later I realized I couldn’t talk on it unless it was on speaker. Almost 10 hours later, I put it in rice and this morning the sound still wasn’t working. I just did the Q tip and it worked! I can’t believe it worked. Thank you!

After looking through other places that suggested the rice treatment I came across this one and decided by tell my friend to try it. And it worked, we were so happy when we heard sound coming from the young phone. In summary this worked.

my iphone speaker wasn’t working , normally i’d try to suck the water out of it. you know? but instead of me trying that and it taking forever i put a litter up to my iphone speaker and let the fire take away the water that was in it. no i didn’t put the yellow part of the fire to my phone just the blue! but it worked.

You are awesome! My phone is still in a bag of rice but this is great. Hopefully it works for my phone. I had it in a Defender series Otterbox (iPhone 6) and I blanked out for a second, phone dropped out of my hands into the water and in less than 3 seconds it was out and I was drying it with a towel and then immediately removed it from the case and dried it and then placed it in the rice. It is completely off right now but before turning it off I noticed the only thing not working is the audio part. I can make calls and hear the person but can’t hear music/videos/audio recordings. Is there hope mine will be ok too like yours was in the clip you posted?

It really did work, I dropped my phone in a bowl of cereal so I tried putting a q tip in the head phone jack but it was to big so I used a skewer and wrapped a peice of paper towel around it and twisted it around in the jack it at started working again👍
Got my iphone momentarily submerged in dishwashing water which got my iphone stuck to headphone mode. I tried the q-tip but it did’nt work. So I turned off my phone soaked it in uncooked rice overnight. When I turned it back on, my iphone speaker is working again! Thanks😂
Yes it did work after I took some of the cotton off. I had to watch the video without the sound to realize you need to take off some of the tip. That info is not in the printed in so the first time the quip didn’t reach in very far.

Worked great had to use a few tips to get to work I knew this was the problem when I tried to adjust the volume and it kept saying headphone volume but worked awesome from the looks of the qtip you should clean the jack anyway
Worked great for me! My issue was that a small amount of water from a surface got into the right bottom speaker making the sound muffled. I was skeptical that putting the q-tip into the jack would fix it but now crystal clear sound! Not sure how it works but thanks!
